Invisalign has been billed as the “clear alternative to braces” since the 1990s, but it has recently exploded in popularity. If you are considering Invisalign, you probably have quite a few questions about what to expect. Here are the answers to the top 10 questions about Invisalign.
1. How does Invisalign work?
The first step is to create a digital 3-D model of your existing smile and morph it to show you what you can expect from each treatment phase, including the final results. When you are satisfied, we will send the model to specialized software to create a customized series of clear, comfortable, medical grade aligners. You will wear each set of aligners 20 to 22 hours per day for two weeks, or as directed, and then switch to the next set at home.
2. What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign uses comfortable, gentle aligners that have no metal brackets or wires to cut or poke the sensitive tissues in your mouth. The clear aligners are nearly invisible, so no one needs to know that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Since they are removable, you can continue to eat your favorite foods and brush and floss your teeth as normal. We need to see you just once every four to six weeks to monitor your progress.
3. Is Invisalign right for me?
For most orthodontic issues, Invisalign and braces work equally well, allowing you to make the decision. If you have very complex issues, we may suggest braces instead, as Invisalign has not been fully studied in these cases.
4. I had braces, but then my teeth shifted again. Can Invisalign help?
If you had braces previously, you might discover that your teeth have slowly shifted since they were removed. Invisalign is an excellent way to correct this problem without undergoing another round of braces.
5. I have dental veneers. Will Invisalign work for me?
Possibly. We will carefully evaluate your entire mouth, including which teeth have veneers and which need straightening, to determine whether you are a candidate for Invisalign.
6. I have a dental bridge. Can I use Invisalign?
Unfortunately, a dental bridge disqualifies patients from using Invisalign. A bridge connects the teeth to each other, while Invisalign moves each tooth individually. We will help you find a solution that meets your needs.
7. Can I eat, drink, smoke, and chew gum with Invisalign?
You can remove your Invisalign aligners to eat and chew gum. Drinking both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks with your aligners in is fine, as is eating small quantities of soft, non-sticky foods. Be sure to clean your aligners and brush your teeth as soon as you can. Smoking will not hurt your aligners, but it could discolor them.
8. How Much Does Invisalign cost?
Invisalign pricing varies by geographic location, as well as the issues that need correcting. In general, though, it is in the same ballpark as braces, especially once you add the costs of upgrades, adjustments, and emergency appointments to the base cost of braces. Invisalign pricing includes all office visits.
9. Is Invisalign covered by dental insurance?
It depends on your insurance policy. Some dental insurance covers both braces and Invisalign, some cover only braces, and some provide no orthodontic coverage at all. In addition, you likely have an annual cap on your benefits. Our office staff will help you understand your out of pocket costs.
10. How can I pay for Invisalign?
We accept most major credit cards, along with CareCredit. This instant-approval healthcare financing offers zero-interest promotions as well as traditional monthly payments. Our office staff will help you understand your payment options and choose the one that is right for you.
